Honouring our history and our future

A hundred years ago, times here were hard, and Antigonish answered with a simple idea: ordinary people in small places can run their own affairs. Out of that came the study clubs, the co-ops, and the credit unions, and the idea travelled from this county around the world.

The Reel comes out of that same tradition. A community's information belongs to its common wealth: what's on, what's open, who to call, and what happened here. The mission is to keep all of that in one calm place, free to read, credited to its sources, and looked after by someone who lives here and answers to nobody else.

The cost of renting our own information

Most of what happens in Antigonish gets announced on platforms owned somewhere else. And honestly, it mostly works. Plenty of local groups use those tools well. But there are quiet costs. An algorithm decides who sees a notice, and it isn't tuned for the town. Posts slip down the feed and vanish behind logins within days. Years of a group's records end up on servers in another country, under terms that can change without anyone here being asked.

The Reel is the other half of the deal: a public record that stays public. Free to read, no account needed, every item credited to its source, and kept as a permanent local archive on Canadian infrastructure.

Keep it current

Checking and updating useful local information, every day: hours, events, notices, and the answers people actually look for. Source checks, corrections, and reviewing what the community sends in, by hand, every day of the year.

Keep it reliable

Maintaining the site, its two dozen credited sources, and the permanent record. Hosting, domain, and backups, all paid for here and all on Canadian infrastructure that answers to nobody else.

Keep building

Making practical improvements where they are needed, decided by what the community uses, not by what an algorithm rewards. New tools, new coverage, and bringing more of the Reel's technology home to Antigonish.
