The Special Olympics Nova Scotia Summer Games are in town, the 161st Highland Games have their opening weekend, and the regular summer rhythm carries on around both.

The big one: more than 900 Special Olympics athletes from across the province are competing all weekend, mostly at StFX. Opening Ceremonies kicked off Friday evening at the Keating Centre. Competition runs through Sunday all over Town. All free to watch. Pick a venue and go cheer.
Friday
- Movie night under the geo dome at FireLoch, 6:15 pm.
- Moses Coady Goes to the Keppoch, Schwartz Building at StFX, 7 pm (also Saturday and Sunday nights). $40, $15 for kids under 12. Tickets at the 5 to $1 Store, the Heritage Museum, MacKinnons Pharmacy and MacDonald's Convenience.
- StFX Art Gallery 50/50 exhibition, Mulroney Hall, noon to 4 pm (Friday and Saturday).
Saturday
- Cat Carma BBQ at Kent, 9 am to 1 pm. Burgers for cat rescue.
- Writer's Circle at 10 am and Chess Club at 1:30 pm, both at the library.
- Fireman's Picnic and Dance, Havre Boucher Community Centre, from 10 am.
- None the Wiser at Candid Brewing, 9 pm to midnight. Special Olympians get in half price.
Sunday
- The Fiddlers Fondo at the Keppoch, morning. A community gravel ride with routnofficial start of Highland Games week.
- Special Olympics medal finals through the morning: softball, swimming, athletics, bocce, golf.
- Highland Games opening church service, St. Ninians, 10:30 am.
- Clan Thompson Pipe Band and Friends concert, St. James United, 2:30 pm.
