Second Call for Affordable Clean Energy Through Green Choice Program

The Province is launching a new competitive procurement to add more low-cost renewable energy to Nova Scotia’s electricity system, further supporting the transition to a cleaner, more energy-independent and affordable electricity system.

The Department of Energy has retained Power Advisory LLC to independently administer a second procurement for the Green Choice Program. The program helps eligible large-scale electricity customers, including public institutions and major industrial and commercial organizations, access renewable electricity generated in Nova Scotia.

“Affordable, reliable electricity is at the heart of all the work we’re doing to modernize Nova Scotia’s electricity system and protect Nova Scotians from rising global energy costs,” said Premier Tim Houston, who is also the Minister of Energy. “A second procurement for Green Choice will expand clean energy on the grid and reduce our reliance on coal, create jobs and new investment and help stabilize Nova Scotians’ electricity costs over the long term.”

The procurement seeks 1,200 gigawatt-hours of annual renewable electricity supply, equivalent to about 350 megawatts of new generation capacity, through an open and competitive process.

Selected proponents will sign 25-year pricing contracts with Nova Scotia Power, increasing the amount of predictable pricing energy in power rates.

The procurement, which launched Thursday, September 10, will remain open until January 14, 2027. The administrator is expected to select projects in May.

Quick Facts:

the program currently has 11 customers, including public institutions and some large industrial and commercial businesses; the program is not accepting new customers at this time

the procurement administrator will evaluate proposals using a range of criteria, including bid energy rates, experience developing renewable energy projects, environmental impact, community engagement, and planned social and economic benefits for Nova Scotians

two projects selected during the program’s first round – Eigg Mountain Wind Farm in Antigonish County and Sugar Maple Wind Farm in Pictou County – both have environmental approvals and are on track to reach commercial operation by the end of 2028

the Green Choice Program is part of Nova Scotia’s Clean Power Plan and supports the legislated provincial target of phasing out coal-fired electricity to achieve 80 per cent clean electricity by 2030

the goal of building 1,000 megawatts of new onshore wind energy in Nova Scotia will create an estimated 680 construction jobs, attract $1.2 billion in local economic investment and generate $8.4 million in annual municipal tax revenue
