RCMP charge man in relation to stolen ambulance

Antigonish County District RCMP has charged a man after an ambulance was stolen from St. Martha’s Hospital.

On September 10, at approximately 4:15 p.m., Antigonish County District RCMP responded to the 0-100 block of Bay St. following a report of a stolen ambulance.

The ambulance was unoccupied at the time of the theft and no injuries were reported.

Officers observed the ambulance on Beech Hill Rd. in Antigonish and attempted a traffic stop; however, the vehicle didn’t pull over and proceeded onto St. Andrews St. In the interest of public safety, officers didn’t pursue the ambulance but continued to track its movements.

Another traffic stop was attempted on Hwy. 104 near James River. The ambulance again failed to stop.

Pictou County District RCMP deployed a spike belt in Sullivans River. The device successfully deflated the ambulance’s tires.

Despite the damage, the ambulance continued travelling along Hwy. 104.

At approximately 5 p.m., the ambulance came to a stop on the shoulder of the highway near New Glasgow, and the driver was safely arrested.

Andrew Cory Hipson, 36, of Deerfield, has been charged with:

Theft of Motor Vehicle

Dangerous Operation of a Conveyance

Driving while Licence is Suspended or Revoked

Flight from Peace Officer

Failure to Comply with Release Conditions

Hipson was remanded into custody pending a future court date.
