Keep Fats, Oils and Grease Out of the Drain
Did you know that pouring fats, oils and grease down the sink can cause serious sewer blockages?
During recent repairs to some areas of the Town's sewer system, crews found buildup of grease inside the pipes. Similar issues have also contributed to partial blockages in sewer mains this year.
When grease goes down the drain, it cools and hardens, sticking to the inside of pipes over time. This can lead to backups, costly repairs and service disruptions for homeowners and the community.
Here are a few simple ways to help:
- Let cooking grease cool and place it in the garbage
- Wipe greasy pots, pans and dishes with a paper towel before washing
- Use sink strainers to catch food scraps
- Never pour grease, oil or fat down sinks, toilets or storm drains
A few small habits in the kitchen can help protect our sewer system and prevent expensive problems down the road. Thank you for doing your part to keep our infrastructure flowing smoothly.
